Character Analysis

Daisy Jones

Tall, thin, and beautiful, Daisy Jones seems destined for stardom from a young age. She leaves a privileged but lonely life in the Hollywood Hills for the seductive adventures of the Sunset Strip, where she throws herself into the whirlwind of sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll. Daisy is beautiful and often touted as an ornament for successful men, but she is smart, tough, and eager to prove herself. She has a difficult time making friends, because in the world of groupies and rock bands, drugs and partying, truly caring for someone is a hard thing to accomplish. Daisy’s friend Simone is the only person Daisy can trust, but Simone is often away pursuing her own music career, leaving Daisy with either her parents, who are uninterested in her, or the rotation of successful men who become entranced by her looks and charm.

Daisy is well-connected and a popular face in magazines, so she finds a manager and recording deal in little time. She is adamant that her creative work reflect her authentic self. Though Daisy wants to live a life free of the control of men, she finds herself in one destructive relationship after another. Despite Billy’s initial resistance when Daisy joins the band, the two comes to realize they have much in common and develop a fruitful musical partnership. Daisy hits rock bottom when her husband, Niccolo, believing she has overdosed, fails to call an ambulance. She soon finds help on her path to sobriety from an unlikely person: Camila, Billy’s wife, who inspired Daisy to make a better life for herself.

Billy Dunne

Billy Dunne is a handsome young man with an eye for new fashion and an ear for good music. He falls in love with music as a kid, after his father leaves his mother and his brother, Graham. Billy lives for music, and he teams up with his brother to start a band. Billy’s band grows bigger and more successful with every year, and he puts all his effort into the music. He is the implied leader of the band due to his star quality and his ability to write great songs.

Billy lives to the extreme in all that he does, but when his drug abuse becomes destructive to his wife, Camila, he determines to stay sober. He throws his whole self into family and music but is threatened when Daisy Jones arrives to collaborate with his band, eventually known as The Six. Billy is used to getting what he wants in music, but so is Daisy. Billy is triggered by Daisy’s drug use as well as her unique musical talent.

Billy must suppress many of his impulses and desires to keep his sobriety intact. He does so for his wife and daughters and, as he later admits, for himself. After the band breaks up, Billy writes music for other artists, finding a way to express his musical creativity while maintaining a peaceful family life.

Camila Dunne

Camila Dunne is a cocktail waitress when she meets Billy. They fall in love, and Camila supports his passion for music. Camila has a clear vision for her future, but when Billy decides to move to Los Angeles to pursue music with a manager, Camila questions the solidity of her future. Camila is kind, but stubborn and determined. She marries Billy and supports his burgeoning music career. When she catches Billy cheating on her while pregnant, she does not break up with him. Rather, she tells him to get himself together before their daughter arrives.

Camila is at Billy’s side when he leaves rehab, and she supports his sober lifestyle by fully believing in his ability to be sober. Camila places all her trust in Billy, a move that works to keep Billy accountable for his actions and inspires his music. She is a good mother to their three daughters and a stable influence in her husband’s life. When the chemistry between Daisy and Billy becomes undeniable, Camila continues to place faith in her husband.

Graham Dunne

Graham Dunne, younger brother of Billy Dunne, is as in love with music as his star bother is. Though he is not the leading man of the band, he eagerly supports his brother’s goals and follows his music career. Graham is a talented musician, but he doesn’t have the same penchant for writing that Billy does. Graham faced the same fatherless childhood as Billy, but Graham believes that he is emotionally more stable than Billy because he had Billy to guide him. Graham does not have the same demons as Billy and does not fall to addiction. Graham is Billy’s major support within the band, and even when Graham is disappointed in him, he loves his brother, and his loyalty is unwavering. Graham falls deeply in love with the keyboardist of The Six, Karen, who later breaks his heart. Graham tries to see everyone’s point of view in a conflict, including Karen’s.

Eddie Loving

The younger brother of original band member Pete Loving, Eddie is invited to join the band when they are still known as the Dunne Brothers, after their original rhythm guitarist is killed in action in the Vietnam War. Eddie is thrilled to be a part of the band, but as the band turns into The Six and gains more fame, Eddie feels ostracized by Billy. Eddie is not included in major decision-making, and he resents Billy because Billy does whatever he wants whenever he wants.

Karen Karen

Karen is a beautiful and talented keyboardist who meets the Dunne Brothers when they open for her first band, the Winters. Karen wants to be treated as a musical equal in an industry controlled by and filled with men, so she joins the Dunne Brothers and renames them The Six when she sees that they respect her for the musician she is. Karen is well-liked and not difficult to work with. She is talented and likes Daisy for her ostentatious appearance and her unapologetic attitude towards men. Karen also likes Camila for Camila’s kindness and certainty. Karen falls in love with Graham but struggles to stay true to herself and ultimately chooses her independence.

Pete Loving

A friend of the Dunnes from high school, Pete joins the Dunne Brothers and continues playing with them until The Six hit mega-stardom with the album Aurora. Pete parties, but he falls in love early on in his career with Jenny, and his goal in life is to settle down with her. He doesn’t have the same craving for fame and power that his brother does, so he rolls with the changes of the band much more easily. Pete doesn’t believe in playing music for fame and is only ever interested in playing rock music. When the band becomes Daisy Jones & The Six, Pete believes they lose their edge with more “soft rock” songs, but he stays loyal to the band until he becomes engaged to Jenny. He is the first who wants to leave the band.

Warren Rhodes

Another friend from their teenage years, Warren joins the band as the Dunne Brothers and experiences the rise to fame with Daisy Jones & The Six. Warren is easy-going and laughs off problems. He encourages his bandmates not to take the music industry so seriously. He is a rational voice in the often-chaotic miscommunication within the band because he simply loves playing music and asks for nothing more.

Rod Reyes

Rod Reyes discovers The Six in New York City and, inspired by Billy Dunne, convinces them to take him on as a music manager. He pushes them to move to Los Angeles, where he lands them a deal with Runner Records. Rod cares about his band members and takes on Daisy Jones when she needs him the most. Rod is a genuine lover of music and stays with the band through even their roughest lows. Rod is a standard of calm throughout the band’s rise to fame.

Teddy Price

Teddy Price is a music producer with Runner Records. He produces The Six and Daisy Jones separately and then connects them to enhance all their careers. Teddy has an understanding of what can make a good musician great, and he acts as a mentor to his musicians. His relationship with Billy is particularly close, as Billy looks to him as a father figure who enabled him to write entire albums of music. Without Teddy, Billy is sure he could not make great music. When Teddy dies at the height of their game, Billy is submerged in grief and at odds with his identity as a musician. Teddy Price acts as the symbolic glue that holds even the most egotistical and neurotic band members together.

Simone Jackson

Simone is Daisy’s first and often only true friend. She meets Daisy on the Sunset Strip, where Simone is making a name for herself as a disco star. She cares deeply for Daisy and is usually the only person concerned about Daisy’s well-being. Simone even takes Daisy in as a teenager and ensures that Daisy finish high school. Simone faces ups and downs in her music career, but wherever she goes she makes sure to stay in contact with Daisy. She is Daisy’s voice of reason, but she can’t always help Daisy make good decisions. She is a loyal and loving friend.
