Part 1, Chapters 1-21Chapter Summaries & Analyses

Part 1: “Heir of Ash”

Part 1, Chapter 1 Summary

Celaena lounges on the roofs of Varese, the capital of Wendlyn, where the king of Adarlan has sent her to assassinate Crown Prince Galan Ashryver. She has decided not to carry out her mission and instead wallows in her hopelessness and powerlessness. In honor of her late friend Nehemia, Celaena plans to seek out Maeve, the queen of the Fae, who is immortal and, therefore, may be able to help her find a way to free Adarlan from its demonic king.

Part 1, Chapter 2 Summary

In the streets of Varese, a Fae warrior named Rowan approaches Celaena and tells her that Maeve has summoned her. He has a striking tattoo in Fae writing going down his face and body. Celaena initially feigns her usual bravado, but she follows Rowan anyway because she needs to see the queen of the Fae.

Part 1, Chapter 3 Summary

Chaol is plagued by his knowledge of Celaena’s true identity and the threat she poses to Dorian. His loyalty is split between them, but his main priority is to protect Dorian. While Chaol and Dorian attempt to mend their friendship after the events of Crown of Midnight, Aedion Ashryver, the “infamous General of the North and cousin to Aelin Galathynius” (20), arrives at the castle, summoned by the king. Chaol wonders how an Ashryver can serve his enemy but notices that Aedion is wearing a black ring like the king’s and his most faithful servants, revealing that he may be mind-controlled. Aedion also carries the Sword of Orynth, an Ashryver heirloom that technically belongs to Celaena.

Part 1, Chapter 4 Summary

Manon Blackbeak, heir to the Blackbeak clan of Ironteeth witches, hides as three village folk pillage her cottage and try to kill her. She traps them and guts them with her retractable teeth and claws, characteristic of the Ironteeth witches. Manon enjoys the kill after weeks of unsuccessful hunting for Crochan witches, who are from an enemy clan. After she killed her first Crochan witch 100 years ago, Manon stole the witch’s distinctive red cloak and has been wearing it ever since.

Part 1, Chapter 5 Summary

As Rowan and Celaena make camp for the night, the latter notices Little Folk, or faeries, watching her from the shadows. The creatures always recognize her as a descendant of Mab, one of Maeve’s sisters, and honor Celaena’s presence with gifts and trinkets wherever she goes.

Part 1, Chapter 6 Summary

Dorian meets Sorscha, a healer, when he needs some cuts on his hands seen to. He recognizes her from the many times she has healed him, Chaol, and Celaena, and he thanks her for keeping quiet about their unusual injuries (those events are related in Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight). Unbeknownst to him, Sorscha has been secretly in love with the prince for years.

Part 1, Chapter 7 Summary

Rowan leads Celaena to Mistward, a mountain outpost still miles away from the Fae city of Doranelle. Maeve is waiting for her there and greets her as “Aelin Ashryver.”

Part 1, Chapter 8 Summary

Maeve, who is powerful and intimidating, tells Celaena that Prince Rowan will train her at Mistward. The queen wants Celaena/Aelin to prove herself before she is allowed to enter Doranelle. However, Celaena and Rowan do not have a good rapport. Celaena also vaguely remembers that her parents wanted to keep her away from Maeve, although she does not know why.

Part 1, Chapter 9 Summary

Manon and her coven have been summoned by her grandmother, the Blackbeak matron. Manon’s coven, the Thirteen, is the most feared and respected among the Ironteeth witches. Mother Blackbeak speaks with a human duke before instructing the Thirteen to summon all witches from the Blackbeak, Yellowlegs, and Blueblood clans to gather in the Ferian Gap. There, the duke has been breeding wyverns for the king’s army and now needs riders to lead them.

Part 1, Chapter 10 Summary

After noticing that some of his men deserted their posts to go to one of Aedion’s infamous parties, Chaol seeks the general out. Despite searching the tavern, Chaol realizes that Aedion is not attending his own party.

Part 1, Chapter 11 Summary

Celaena, who decides to go by the name Elentiya to prevent her from being identified, starts working as a scullery maid at Mistward. In the kitchen, she befriends an older half-Fae cook named Emrys and his younger helper, Luca.

Part 1, Chapter 12 Summary

The witches gather in the carved halls of the Omega, the mountain next to the Ferian Gap. They have a memorial service for Baba Yellowlegs, the eponymous clan’s matron, whom Celaena killed in Crown of Midnight. Human servants of the king lead the Blackbeak, Blueblood, and Yellowlegs matrons and their respective heirs (Manon, Petrah, and Iskra) on a tour of the wyvern hatcheries. They show the witches a bull named Titus, the biggest wyvern they have, and Manon decides he will be hers.

Part 1, Chapter 13 Summary

After her kitchen duty, Rowan leads Celaena to a training site. He asks her to shift into her Fae form, but she cannot do so on command. Rowan then takes her to a field covered in wights’ barrows, challenges her to walk through it, and promises to take her to Doranelle once she crosses it.

Part 1, Chapter 14 Summary

Although she expects to see a wight, Celaena finds a strange dark figure waiting among the barrows instead. She is overtaken by a flashback to the night her parents were killed and she woke up in their blood-soaked bed. She then remembers the scene of Nehemia’s murder before Rowan suddenly drags her from the darkness. He does not know what the dark presence is either.

Manon and the Thirteen try flying on the wyverns for the first time and successfully complete the Crossing, a test of their flying skills over the Gap. Her grandmother then makes her the Blackbeak Wing Leader and orders her to win the upcoming War Games by any means necessary.

Part 1, Chapter 17 Summary

Beaten and bruised, Celaena suffers through another day of training with Rowan but still cannot shift into her Fae form. That night, she listens to Emrys tell scary stories about dark faeries to a captive audience and incidentally learns that Rowan can shift into a hawk.

Part 1, Chapter 18 Summary

While Dorian is visiting Sorscha again, she asks him about the mysterious creature that killed people in the castle during the events of Throne of Glass. Overwhelmed by traumatic memories, Dorian accidentally lets out a wave of magic. Sorscha decides to help him conceal his abilities and find a way to control them.

One night, Chaol follows Aedion to a rebel lair after the general only pretends to attend one of his own parties again.

Part 1, Chapter 19 Summary

After discovering that Aedion is working with rebel leaders Murtaugh and his grandson Ren, Chaol is caught. He learns that Aedion had a replica of the black ring made, so he is not under the king’s control and decides to tell him about Aelin being alive. Now tentative allies, Chaol and Aedion make a bargain to share information.

Part 1, Chapter 20 Summary

After weeks of unsuccessful training, Celaena and Rowan are still at each other’s throats. However, she finally shifts when Rowan bites her during one of their fights.

Part 1, Chapter 21 Summary

Now, in her Fae form, Celaena accidentally lets out her magic and sets the surrounding forest on fire before Rowan, who can control air, smothers it. They have a climactic fight, which leads to Celaena leaving Mistward, still intending to fulfill her promise to Nehemia. That night, as she camps in the forest, she is awakened by a strange silence.

Part 1, Chapters 1-21 Analysis

Sarah J. Maas’s novel Heir of Fire is divided into two parts, “Heir of Ash” and “Heir of Fire.” This structure reflects the main protagonist’s journey. She begins the story as Celaena, a depressed and hopeless assassin, but then learns to embrace her identity as Aelin, a warrior queen fighting for justice.

Part 1 reintroduces characters who appeared in earlier books in the series, like Celaena, Dorian, and Chaol. It also introduces new characters, such as Rowan, Aedion, Manon, and Maeve, who were mentioned in previous installments. The first few chapters build up the main plot points and themes that will be developed throughout the novel before setting up the following book’s narrative stakes.

Heir of Fire picks up soon after the events that concluded Crown of Midnight: Celaena left Adarlan for Wendlyn, officially on a secret mission to assassinate Wendlyn’s prince, but also to evade the king’s detection as one of his enemies. She is coping with the death of her friend Nehemia and what she perceives as Chaol’s betrayal, while Chaol and Dorian’s previously close friendship is now damaged. As a result, Heir of Fire follows three main plots happening concurrently in different parts of the Throne of Glass world, and foreshadows the characters’ eventual reunion in Queen of Shadows. First, the story focuses on Celaena’s emotional growth and her developing relationship with Rowan in Wendlyn. Secondly, it follows Chaol’s efforts to work with Aedion and Dorian’s growing awareness of his father’s cruelty in Adarlan. Finally, the story develops Manon’s side plot among the Ironteeth witches. Although she is not yet connected to the previously established plot points, elements of her character arc foreshadow her significant role in the rest of the series.

At the beginning of the book, Celaena is hopeless and alone, and her bravado in front of others hides her emotional struggles. The first part’s title, “Heir of Ash,” suggests her struggle to cope with her trauma and depicts the darker sides of Redemption Through Self-Acceptance and Staying in Control. For instance, Celaena feels like she has lost control of her agency and identity since she is forced to work for the king and hide her identity as Aelin. This sets up her eventual emotional breakthrough alongside Rowan’s introduction. He is initially framed as an antagonistic character at odds with Celaena, but the parallels between them foreshadow their eventual unconditional friendship. For example, the symbolism of Rowan’s tattoo evolves from negative connotations to characterizing him as loyal and compassionate.

On the other hand, although Dorian’s arc throughout the novel also depicts his emotional growth, the prince’s trajectory goes from a position of relative authority to a climactic loss of control and power at the end. At first, Dorian is safe and protected, although he hides his magical abilities. He develops a romantic relationship and gains confidence throughout the story, but his situation shifts when the king discovers his powers. This leads Dorian to defend his friends against his father and force them to abandon him.

Finally, Manon, the third protagonist, also begins as an élite warrior and leader among the witches before becoming more aware of the Ironteeth clans’ dysfunction, which causes her downfall. The parallels between Celaena, Dorian, and Manon, heirs of the most magically and politically powerful figures in the Throne of Glass world, build up toward their significant roles in the following books. Heir of Fire sets up their relationship by providing insight into their emotional journeys as all three learn to fully embrace their identities, hinting at the theme of redemption through self-acceptance, which will drive the plot as the story progresses.

At the end of this first section, Celaena is again hopeless and alone as she faces the skinwalkers. Dorian has just revealed his weakness, i.e., his magical abilities, to Sorscha. Chaol realizes he cannot remain impartial in the fight against the king, while Aedion’s deception is revealed. The symbolism of the Sword of Orynth emphasizes this while also hinting at key plot points in Celaena’s quest to defeat the Valg and reclaim her throne. Finally, Manon’s rebellion against her grandmother in choosing Abraxos also reveals cracks in her belief in the Ironteeth order. All the main characters are at a turning point, which sets up new developments in the following chapters.
