Character Analysis

Annaleigh Thaumas

Eighteen-year-old Annaleigh Thaumas is the protagonist of House of Salt and Sorrows, with the novel following her first-person perspective. Annaleigh is empathetic, intelligent, and determined to investigate her eldest sister Eulalie’s potential murder. She often assists other characters with their conflicts, such as tending to her pregnant stepmother, Morella; comforting her older sister Camille when she laments her lack of suitors; sleeping with her younger sister Lenore after her fellow triplets die; and protecting her youngest sister Verity from Kosamaras, Harbinger of Madness and Nightmares. While kind, she knows how to take control of difficult situations, like the Churning Festival feast, which makes her sisters, even Camille, look to her for guidance.

As Annaleigh investigates Eulalie’s death and their family’s potential curse, she finds allies in childhood friend Fisher and handsome stranger Cassius—the latter of whom becomes her love interest. Despite being logical and partially because she is logical, she finds herself doubting Verity’s talk of ghosts and accusing Cassius of being her sisters’ killer due to Kosamaras’s illusions. However, she learns to trust Cassius and think through difficult situations in which others distrust her, reinforcing her fortitude and seeing to her happy ending as overseer of the lighthouse, Old Maude.

Cassius

Cassius is Annaleigh’s love interest, a demigod who mirrors her in many ways. From the moment they meet, he is chivalrous to her. He finds her intriguing, as she does him, and flirts with her often; this early interest is likely fueled by her deceased sisters’ high regard for her. Cassius is one of the few who believes Annaleigh’s talk of murders and ghosts (as he met her sisters’ souls), and his knowledge of the supernatural helps her solve mysteries such as Kosamaras’s illusionary balls. He often comes to her aid, even risking his life to save Verity.

Cassius is the son of a human man and Versia, queen of the night; he is also the nephew of Kosamaras herself. Like Annaleigh, a noble, he wishes to be judged for who he is, not by labels or titles. He acts against his aunt to help Annaleigh, and the two are eventually reunited by Old Maude after his temporary death.

The Thaumas Sisters

As fellow daughters of Duke Ortun and Cecilia of the Salann Islands, Annaleigh Thaumas’s seven sisters play various roles in her quest for truth. Camille, as the eldest sister and heir of the family, is Annaleigh’s confidant and foil. Unlike Annaleigh, she believes the family should cease mourning their deceased sisters (Ava, Octavia, Elizabeth, and Eulalie) and mother (Cecilia) and enjoy life, dismissing Annaleigh’s talk of murders and curses. She despises their stepmother Morella and is obsessed with finding a suitor, as she considers marriage both a source of joy and a duty. Verity, as the youngest sister, is particularly vulnerable to Kosamaras’s illusions—making her drawings and visions symbolic of the supernatural. The triplets—Lenore, Rosalie, and Ligeia—are particularly close. They do everything together, their jokes adding levity to the novel’s ominous tone. When Rosalie and Ligeia freeze to death, Lenore becomes lifeless. Annaleigh makes an effort to care for Lenore during this difficult time, and she eventually regains her voice. The remaining sisters are Mercy and Honor, who play less significant roles.

Morella

Morella is Duke Ortun’s second wife, the Thaumas sisters’ stepmother, a mainlander, and the novel’s antagonist. Despite her kind demeanor, she proves manipulative. As a young mainlander, she is genuinely ignorant of islander culture but is later revealed to have gained her position through murder. Morella killed Ortun’s first wife, Cecilia, to claim him for herself and later killed eldest sister Eulalie—though she comes to regret her actions.

After killing Cecilia, Morella made a deal with the Trickster god of bargains, Viscardi, to force Ortun to reciprocate her love and ensure she bears a son—as she assumes their son will inherit Highmoor Manor. However, upon being treated kindly by Annaleigh in particular, she regrets taking advantage of the family. In the end, she sacrifices herself to Viscardi for the sisters’ sake and ends his and Kosamaras’s illusions once and for all.
