Melody is annoyed with Cam, primarily because of his fantastic luck. She cannot believe that people are now doing his homework for him. She thinks about telling their parents but decides not to for several reasons. Notably, she wants to keep the 20% cut of Cam's profits and enjoys watching Cam's growing distress. Melody starts watching Cam's stream on her iPad. Even though she admits that Cam's stream is different, she quickly realizes that his 6,000 followers only watch because they want him to reach Level 13. Melody also doubts Cam can reach Level 13 because the game is challenging. She wonders about her 20% share and whether Cam will profit from his stream.
Pavel is worried about the Awesome Threesome falling apart. The first problem is Chuck, who spends all his time with Daphne or texting her. Chuck’s behavior also mimics Dapne's, as he always complains about Cam and Pavel exploiting Elvis. The friendship has become so strained that Pavel no longer argues with Chuck, finding it pointless.
However, Pavel thinks Cam might be an even bigger problem. Cam's stream is ruining the Awesome Threesome's identity as gamers. They do not play together anymore. Instead, Pavel and Chuck support Cam's streaming, which is not fun for them.
Even worse, Cam is a mess—exhausted, stressed, and red-eyed after every stream. Elvis is hard to control whenever they turn off the game. When Pavel mentions this, Cam tells him to look at the numbers. The stream now has over 15,000 followers and over 1,000 subscribers who pay $10 monthly to watch Cam game.
Pavel thinks the real problem is that Cam used to be a slacker, but now he is working nonstop to keep up his stream. Between streaming, setting up, taking down, and transporting the beaver, Cam has a full-time job and school. Pavel wonders what will happen to the Awesome Threesome without its leader.
Cam's stream reaches 30,000 followers and has several thousand subscribers. Although minors are not supposed to monetize their accounts without adult approval, Cam got Mr. Fanshaw to sign off on it, who believed the form was for online donations for P.A.G.
Cam is nervous because most of his followers only want to see him reach Level 13, and Cam does not believe he can make it. Even Elvis is getting frustrated, jumping on the TV and staring at it. The struggle to reach Level 13 consumes Cam, making sleeping difficult. He feels sick with constant headaches and body aches, which makes everything more challenging. Despite this, he must keep his stream upbeat and lively. His followers keep pushing him to reach Level 13, causing Cam even more stress.
Cam starts enjoying school because no one expects anything from him there, and he can even catch up on some sleep. He worries because so many people are helping him with assignments that they often overlap, but he decides not to say anything in case they get angry.
Mr. Fanshaw wakes Cam up after one of his classes. He is concerned about Cam's poor physical state but congratulates him on his improved grades. Mr. Fanshaw reminds Cam about the charity car wash after school, which Cam tries and fails to avoid.
Daphne catches Cam on his way out and has him run a stand. The paggers keep coming over to check on Cam and thank him for helping. Cam is exhausted when he sees a tall, thin man in his 30s staring at him. It jolts him out of his sleepiness, but no one sees the man when Cam asks his friends.
Melody goes to her friend Katrina's house. Katrina shows Melody her new favorite stream, which turns out to be Cam's. Melody is surprised and irritated that Katrina does not recognize Cam and that Cam now has over 43,000 followers. Furious that Cam's luck prevails again, even though she will get 20% of his profits, Melody is too angry to work on her project with Katrina and leaves early.
On her way home, she sees Cam biking Elvis back to his habitat. Melody yells Cam's gamer name, startling her brother and causing steer his bike into a flower bed. Cam tells her not to use his gamer tag, and she replies that he should not stream in front of over 43,000 people if he wants to keep it a secret. Cam's confusion makes Melody realize she is being unreasonable. She calms down. Melody tells Cam that Katrina is a fan and that other classmates probably watch his streams.
Melody looks at Cam and notices how sick he looks—pale, skinny, and unhappy. Cam assures her she will still get her 20%, but Melody no longer cares about the money. She is more worried about Cam’s mental and physical health.
Elvis still has not regained his winter weight, causing Daphne much distress. Between worrying about Elvis and running the P.A.G., Daphne has little energy left for her relationship with Chuck. To make things worse, Chuck is not getting along with Pavel, and Cam is too focused on his stream. The stream has become a full-fledged business, with 200,000 viewers and 20,000 paying subscribers.
One day, Chuck walks through the school's Hall of Heroes, where students post pictures of people they admire. He sees a picture of GameFox229 printed out and pasted on the wall. Chuck panics, realizing that Daphne will recognize Elvis immediately. He climbs on a chair and rips down the picture, tearing it into as many pieces as possible. Mr. Fanshaw interrupts and asks if Chuck tore the picture off the wall. Despite Mr. Fanshaw's questions, Chuck insists he does not know anything. He gets a week of detention and must replace the picture.
Chuck cannot tell Daphne the real reason for his detention, so he tells her he got into a fight. She is horrified and lectures him about his behavior.
After detention, Chuck helps Cam with the stream. Elvis knocks the controller out of Cam's hands when he uses the wrong setting. They take Elvis back to his habitat, but Daphne is there. Cam and Chuck run, but Daphne finds Chuck. She believes Chuck is there to check on Elvis. When Chuck returns to the bikes, Cam stares in shock, saying he saw the tall, thin man again.
After running from Daphne, Cam sees a black SUV. The driver slows down when he spots Cam and creeps along the street. Later that night, Cam swears he sees the same SUV parked across the street from his house. He spends most of the evening in the attic, watching the SUV through binoculars. When his dad asks what he is doing, Cam says he is working on a school project. His dad congratulates him on his excellent grades but expresses concern about Cam's health. Everyone has noticed that Cam has lost weight and looks unwell. His dad realizes Cam has a fever. Although Cam knows he is sick, he does not want his streaming interrupted. He says he is only overheated from running and asks his dad not to mention the fever to his mom.
That night, Cam has a nightmare where the tall, thin man tells him that reaching 50,000 subscribers will cost him his soul. Cam struggles to fall back asleep. The next day, he barely finishes school, and even Pavel tells him he looks terrible. Cam shares his dream with Pavel, who takes it more seriously than Cam expected, worrying him even more.
Daphne feels disheartened by Elvis's weight loss and Mr. Fanshaw's rejection of her fundraising ideas. Mr. Fanshaw tells her that while the P.A.G. is excellent, it cannot do everything. Daphne bursts into tears. She argues that Cam would find a way to raise the money, but Mr. Fanshaw disagrees. Daphne feels like she is letting both the P.A.G. and Cam down.
Determined to help, Daphne makes posters asking for fundraising ideas and finds Xavier silk-screening a GameFox229 shirt. He tries to explain the stream, but Daphne is not interested in gaming. Several students offer Xavier increasing amounts of money for the shirt at lunch, but he refuses to sell it. Later, Daphne convinces Xavier to make more shirts and sell them for a P.A.G. fundraiser. Despite Chuck's objections, Daphne proceeds with the plan.
The shirts become an instant hit. By the end of the week, they sell nearly 1,000 and raise over $20,000 for the library. Feeling sorry for Cam, Daphne arranges a ceremony to gift him a GameFox229 shirt, but Chuck and Cam's lackluster reactions frustrate her.
In this section, tensions mount as characters grapple with internal and interpersonal conflicts. Daphne's relationship with Chuck exemplifies the disparities between Expectations, Perceptions, and Reality and The Importance of Community, Collaboration, and Friendship. Daphne frequently expresses her dependence on Chuck, stating, “It was a good thing I had Chucky. Otherwise, everything would have been negative” (164). Despite this, she fails to understand his reactions, shows little interest in his passions, and is often distressed by his “moods.” However, she never acknowledges any issues in their relationship, only remarking that she will “never understand guys” (173). Daphne is so focused on her issues that she does not see the problems with her and Chuck's relationship, causing a breakdown in their relationship and their established sense of trust.
On the other hand, Chuck feels neglected, believing that “half of Daphne's attention was on Elvis, and the other half was concerned with running the P.A.G. So there was nothing left for our relationship” (148). This disconnect highlights that Daphne and Chuck are experiencing two different relationships. Neither fulfills the other's expectations and perceptions of what a successful, strong relationship should look like. As a result, their connection and alignment begin to erode.
Daphne's distorted perceptions temporarily make her happier in the relationship. For instance, when she finds Chuck in the woods, she assumes Chuck is there to check on Elvis. Similarly, she interprets Pavel's excruciating politeness as accepting her relationship with Chuck. In actuality, Pavel is furious. Daphne also misreads Chuck's reaction about the t-shirt idea as just another “mood,” failing to see his genuine concerns. Daphne's issues with perception make Chuck feel even more isolated. Chuck's dishonesty exacerbates these misperceptions. Daphne believes in the solidity of their relationship, and Chuck hides why he receives detention and is in the woods. He is caught between his relationship with Daphne and his relationship with and commitments to Cam and Pavel. Here, Korman highlights Chuck’s competing priorities as a friend and boyfriend, demonstrating the novel’s exploration of the theme of Evolving Identities, Relationships, and Responsibilities. Chuck's attempt to shield Daphne from the truth further distances them from each other. This highlights how dishonesty can harm relationships and exacerbate conflicts between established responsibilities and new priorities.
Meanwhile, Cam's streaming success brings its problems and demonstrates Korman’s continued exploration of the theme of Expectations, Perceptions, and Reality. Cam's dream is to become a streamer with 50,000 subscribers. However, the closer he gets to his goal, the more miserable he becomes. Cam is so focused on his “lifestyle” that he cannot see what it costs him, physically and emotionally. Everyone around Cam notices his weight loss, stress, and misery. Even Melody, the most critical of Cam, notices “he seemed thinner and older, with dark circles under his eyes. Weary. Unhappy. Unhealthy” (132).
Cam is plagued by self-doubt and anxiety. He knows most followers only want to see him reach Level 13, a feat he is not confident he can achieve. His physical and mental health deteriorate as the pressure mounts. Cam's exhaustion and stress manifest in constant headaches, body aches, and a general sense of unwellness, which he hides from to keep his stream running smoothly. While Cam’s decreased well-being is apparent to his closest friends and family members, he puts on a brave face for his loyal followers and paying subscribers. This disconnect between Cam’s online persona and daily reality weighs heavily on him. Through Cam’s mental and physical decline, Korman illustrates how digital identities can often obscure the personal struggles and inner turmoil someone faces offline. This reveals how the theme of Perceptions, and Reality extends beyond face-to-face interactions and includes relationships fostered in digital spaces, including between streamers like Cam and his loyal fan base.
Elvis is another example of perception not matching reality. Chuck views Cam's stream as exploitative. However, Elvis's reactions illustrate that he genuinely enjoys playing video games with Cam. While most wild animals would destroy Cam's house, looking for an escape route, Elvis sits rather docilely on Cam's shoulder and reacts to the actions on screen. He acts wildly only when the characters place Elvis in his carrier to return him to his habitat. However, the Awesome Threesome's behavior still is not in Elvis's best interest. Like Cam, Elvis continues to lose weight. His docile nature indicates that he may be ill and does not have the energy to fight.
Moreover, constantly taking Elvis from his habitat causes a breakdown in the community’s trust. Every time the boys take Elvis from his habitat, they compound the lies they tell other people to keep their secret, furthering the rifts between the Awesome Threesome and their peers. As the Awesome Threesome continues to fracture, Cam, Pavel, and Chuck feel isolated from each other and further distance themselves from their community.
The characters' failure to align their expectations with reality and lack of honest communication lead to the breakdown of friendships, romantic relationships, academic commitments, and well-being. Daphne and Chuck's relationship suffers from misperceptions and dishonesty, while Cam's streaming success isolates him and deteriorates his mental and physical health. In this section, Korman illustrates that empathy, honesty, and realistic expectations that evolve based on shifting identities and responsibilities are crucial for sustaining healthy relationships and strengthening communities.
