Part 1, Chapter 1 Summary: “Rowan”

Content Warning: This section of the guide describes and discusses the source text’s treatment of physical abuse, emotional abuse, and alcohol addiction. This section also references a brief mention of suicidal ideation that appears in the source text.

Rowan Kane is attending the funeral of his grandfather, who recently died after a three-year coma. As Rowan recalls his mother’s funeral, which occurred when he was young, his rudeness chases off other mourners. However, his brother, Callahan (or Cal), reminds him to put on the best face he can in honor of their grandfather. After the funeral, Rowan and his two brothers, Declan and Cal, each receive a letter written by their grandfather prior to his coma. The letters explain the conditions of the will. To receive his 18% share of their grandfather’s company, Dreamland, Rowan must become the director and spearhead a special project, using his creative skills to develop a renovation plan. Rowan balks at the task, having given up on his creative work long ago. The task set for his oldest brother, Declan, is to marry and have a child, and Cal must reach out to a woman from his past named Alana. Despite the hindrance that these conditions represent, each brother agrees that they must band together to prevent their father from gaining their shares of the company.

Part 1, Chapter 2 Summary: “Rowan”

After moving to Florida to become Director of Dreamland Park, Rowan slips into a staff meeting to observe how the managers and employees work together. A young woman also slips into the meeting late, sitting next to him. He discovers from the man in front of them that her name is Zahra. She makes comments about the lack of board members’ care for their employees and the state of the park, and this angers Rowan. They argue, and Rowan threatens to fire her, revealing his position of authority. Undaunted, Zahra insults him just as he is introduced to the rest of the employees.

Part 1, Chapter 3 Summary: “Zahra”

Zahra prepares for a day of work as she tells her friend, Claire, about Rowan’s behavior, reflecting on the fact that Rowan is the reason why the Dreamland employees still have unfairly low wages and bad health insurance. Zahra works at the Magic Wand Salon as one of the stylists who make children look like their favorite characters. When the doors open, she is assigned to a girl in a wheelchair, and Zahra works hard to make the girl feel special. Meanwhile, Rowan has arrived at the salon and asks Zahra’s boss, Regina, all about Zahra. Henry, the floor attendant for the day, alerts Zahra to this fact. Zahra hopes that Regina will keep her personal dislike of Zahra to herself.

Part 1, Chapter 4 Summary: “Rowan”

Rowan thinks unhappily about being forced to live near Dreamland and to work in the park, which holds unhappy family memories for him. At a meeting with the head park Creators, he demands that a new plan for the park be finalized within six months: one that will increase ROI by at least 5%. He agrees to open the annual employee submissions for park suggestions and plans early that year. He also agrees to consider only the best projects after the Creators have sorted through them. His father, Seth, calls, trying to learn why Rowan suddenly wants to be Director and why he has submitted a large funding request; before they hang up, he insults his son in the way that Rowan has come to expect from Seth’s abusive upbringing.

Part 1, Chapter 5 Summary: “Zahra”

Claire urges Zahra to submit a proposal to the Dreamland open employee submissions. She reminds Zahra of her talent and suggests that she use the competition to move past the feelings of insecurity she developed after her ex-boyfriend, Lance, stole her ideas and used them as his own. (Lance also cheated on her.) Zahra agrees to submit a proposal on the condition that Claire apply for the open position in the kitchen of the park’s Michelin-star restaurant. Later, as she struggles to think of ideas for the proposal, Zahra turns to wine and then writes a proposal that openly criticizes the Nebula Land project, the idea that Lance stole from her and then altered. Intending to use this file only as a way to get her feelings out before writing something else, she clicks “save,” only to discover in the morning that she has actually clicked “submit.

Part 1, Chapter 6 Summary: “Zahra”

Rowan calls Zahra for a Saturday morning meeting. As Zahra arrives, she believes that she is about to be fired for her proposal. Instead, Rowan gives her a contract to become part of the Creator team, giving her a raise and calling her proposal bold. Zahra tries to refuse at first, believing herself unworthy of holding a place on such a venerated team. However, Rowan insists that he will not let her leave the office without signing. After some straight-faced but humorous comments from Rowan, Zahra finds herself appreciating his blunt demeanor.

Part 1, Chapter 7 Summary: “Rowan”

Rowan watches Zahra as she reads the contract, wondering why he feels attracted to her. She reveals that she knew his grandfather and that they spoke several times, but she does not reveal how they knew one another. Later, Rowan, Cal, and Declan meet on a video chat to discuss progress on their respective plans. Afterward, Rowan searches employee records to discover how Zahra knew his grandfather. He discovers her original submission of a plan for Nebula Land three years ago, alongside a note from his grandfather about setting up a meeting to discuss her rejection and improvements to her proposal. He also notices that the successful, accepted plan for Nebula Land was submitted a year later by someone named Lance, and he decides to find out why someone other than Zahra submitted that plan.

Part 1, Chapter 8 Summary: “Zahra”

At dinner with her family and Claire, Zahra shares the news of her promotion, and they celebrate. On her first day, Rowan leads Zahra to her new department with a silent, informal tour of the Creator space. She is introduced to her team and given a cubicle, and as she revels in her new space, Rowan catches her celebrating. Rowan helps her with her computer, and they each find themselves privately contemplating the increasing attraction between them.

Part 1, Chapter 9 Summary: “Zahra”

Zahra finalizes her presentation for the weekly meetings that the Creators hold with Rowan to propose park projects. She worries over her lack of artistic skill with her mock-up and wonders again if she is good enough for the team. The other Creators’ presentations are adequate but do not contain any outstanding ideas. Zahra’s nerves build nonetheless as she waits to present. Hers is the final presentation, and all the Creators are engaged and pleased. Even Rowan is impressed—although not by her mock-up—and he tells the other Creators that he expects presentations more on par with Zahra’s next time. During the meeting, she gives him attitude in front of the others, so he dismisses everyone but her. Their subsequent confrontation causes heightened frustration and emotion, and Rowan spontaneously gives in to his attraction and kisses her. After they break apart, Zahra flees from the room.

Part 1, Chapters 1-9 Analysis

Part 1 of The Fine Print crafts dual conflicts that are eventually revealed to be intricately linked, and Zahra is the linchpin for both, for even as she captures Rowan’s romantic attentions, she will also prove to be an invaluable contributor to his work at Dreamland and an instrumental factor in the events that finally allow him to access his inheritance. In these early chapters, however, the enemies-to-lovers trope plays the primary role of moving the plot forward. This first novel in the Dreamland Billionaires series also introduces the premise for the overarching plot of the broader series, for it explains the tasks that each of the Kane brothers must complete to gain their respective inheritances, although the details for Declan’s and Cal’s tasks are left vague in this first installment. The opening chapters also create the stakes for the conflict as well as the limiting factors, and Rowan and Zahra’s private emotional struggles reflect The Effects of Trauma and Recovery as they work to leave the past behind and create a new future for themselves.

Zahra’s first major hurdle in her own inner conflict comes in the form of her accidental project proposal and resulting promotion. While the mistake of sending in the wrong proposal adds a touch of humor to the plot, her initial impulse to reject the promotion reveals her deeper insecurities, for she genuinely believes that she is not worthy of joining the Creator team. Between her lack of a “fancy” education and Lance’s outright theft of her ideas years ago, Zahra allows her ingrained imposter syndrome to overwhelm her. Although she and Rowan have yet to feel anything other than mutual dislike, it is telling that he is the one who urges her to accept the position, and as he declares that he will not let her leave his office without signing the contract, this moment foreshadows the greater connection that the two will develop. In the meantime, his insistence helps her to become determined to embrace her new opportunity with as much confidence and excellence as she can manage.

The effects of trauma and recovery are further developed in a negative sense in these initial chapters, for Rowan exhibits a range of problematic behaviors that forecast trouble on the horizon of his developing relationships. Although the narrative reveals how cold and hard-hearted he can be, his emotional journey, unlike Zahra’s, barely begins in Part 1. Instead, his interactions with Zahra highlight just how far he has retreated into the solemn façade of an efficient businessman to protect himself from the risks inherent in deeper connections. Significantly, Zahra is the one who highlights the need for his journey of Learning to Feel Empathy for Others. She does not know who he is when they first meet, but her scathing comments about Dreamland’s poor pay rates and lackluster insurance policies plant a seed in Rowan’s mind; likewise, her blunt words open his eyes and make him aware of the simmering employee concerns during his time at Dreamland.

As with her journey through trauma recovery, Zahra’s recovering The Link Between Creativity and Mental Health plays a primary role during Part 1. While Rowan still resists creativity because his father taught him to see it as a “weakness,” Zahra, thanks to her roommate Claire, resolves to embrace and expand her creative processes. Despite her horror at the drunken, accidentally submitted proposal, the file allows others to see her potential, and the proposal launches her into a new position and a new life organized around creativity. Although Zahra still feels uncertain of her skills and is desperate to prove her worth as a Creator, she is well on her way to a life of joy through creativity in Part 1.

These early chapters also introduce the basis for the growing relationship between Rowan and Zahra. As with many romance novels, the connection between the characters begins with the stereotypical trope of instant attraction, for just as Rowan notices his body responding to Zahra before he even learns her name, Zahra also finds herself attracted to Rowan in ways that surprise and unnerve her. Characteristically, both are reluctant to admit their feelings, but the author capitalizes on the resulting tension by crafting a scene of spontaneous (yet highly problematic) intimacy when Rowan kisses Zahra after her first Creator meeting. This moment builds further personal and inter-relational conflict as the two try to resist their attraction for one another.
