Ann is wearing a gorgeous dress and makeup for a night out but feels like a fraud. Milly sent five large packages from Canada including good wool for the winter and beautiful blue and purple fabric. Miriam convinces Ann to make a dress for herself, and Ann agrees on the condition that Miriam makes one for herself. Milly writes a letter to Ann saying how different Canada is from England because there are no rations, and everything is cheaper and readily available. After Ann and Miriam make new dresses, they decide to celebrate Doris before her wedding. They go to the Astoria for dancing.
At the dance hall, the women find a table and get lemonade. At the next table, Ann notices an apparently rich and handsome army captain. He catches her eye and asks her to dance. Ann can’t believe it, but she dances and has a drink with him. His name is Jeremy Thickett-Milne. He asks Ann about Elizabeth’s dress, but she declines to reveal details. Jeremy gives her his card and insists she ring him for dinner. He returns Ann to her friends, and Ann feels like she is in a fairy tale, hardly believing that a rich man is interested in an ordinary girl from Barking.
Miriam has never been dancing, and she is content to sit at the table and watch the others. She keeps an eye on Ann and is nervous when Ann is out of sight for a while; she is relieved when Jeremy brings her back. Ann and her friends chat about how handsome Jeremy is. But they also say Ann should have dinner with him in a public place for safety.
Ann and Miriam decide to walk to the train because it’s a nice night. Miriam is knocked into the street by the crowds and her heel gets caught in a metal grate. She and Ann can’t get it out and decide to abandon the shoe so they don’t get hit by a car. Just then, a man comes and frees the shoe. He gives it to Miriam and introduces himself as Walter Kaczmarek. He accompanies them through the crowds and reveals he is editor-in-chief of the magazine Picture Weekly. He says he tries to publish serious things and not scandalous articles. Miriam agrees to buy a copy of his magazine, and he gives her his card to ring him for lunch. When he leaves them at the train station, the women giggle about the fabric Milly sent being magic.
Heather is a block away from work when her friend Brett texts that men in suits are in Richard’s office, and he looks stressed. Heather begins to worry and finds everyone at work tense. Heather gets an email from Richard saying they are making alterations in the corporate structure, and to remain at her desk until he calls. Richard later tells Heather that she is being let go, and she needs to gather her belonging and leave the office as soon as possible. Heather is a little relieved because this means she will have time to figure out what she wants to do with her life. She decides to take a vacation to London to find out more about her grandmother.
In these chapters, the characters again experience life-altering change. Ann meets Jeremy, who will later betray and hurt her deeply. Miriam meets Walter, whom she will fall in love with. The meetings happen one after another, and they both seem romantic. Ann is singled out in a dance hall, where a rich man sweeps her off her feet. But their difference in class is obvious and is set up to be a problem later. Classism is again evident when Jeremy’s sister snubs Ann in the dance hall, which foreshadows Jeremy snubbing her for the same reason later. Walter rescues Miriam’s shoe from a street grate. Miriam is nervous that he is a journalist because she can’t reveal any details of her work. The men who come into Ann’s and Miriam’s lives represent new opportunities for them. Yet they have reason to question whether the men are interested in them or their role at Hartnell.
Jeremy seems charming but turns out to be dangerous, while Walter could be a threat but proves to be a good man. Meanwhile, Heather loses her job, which sets her on a trajectory to go to England, find Miriam, and discover her true purpose. These chapters begin to highlight the theme of The Role of Royalty. Not only is Ann fascinated by the royal family and the possibility of working on the princess’s dress, but the men who come into her and Miriam’s lives strengthen the connection to royalty. Jeremy is in the Royal Army and asks about the dress, and Walter is a journalist whose magazine covers the royal family. The friendship between Ann and Miriam, as well as their romantic partnerships, occur in the context of a society deeply shaped by its royal household.
