Chapter 13 Summary: “Ann—August 18, 1947”

Mr. Hartnell comes to the embroidery workroom and announces that the queen and Princess Elizabeth have accepted his design for the wedding gown and all the other gowns required for the ceremony. Hartnell and Miss Duley ask Miriam and Ann privately to make the embroidery samples to show the queen. They remind Ann and Miriam that they can’t breathe a word of this to anybody. Every detail of the gown must be kept secret. Ann and Miriam agree that they won’t say anything. Miriam and Ann work on the samples and are so excited they miss their morning break and work until lunch.

At lunch, her coworkers ask Ann about her date with Jeremy. Ann says she didn’t go but doesn’t tell them that, when she called him, a woman answered and told her to stop calling. At supper, Ann and Miriam discuss the samples, and Ann is surprised that Miriam isn’t excited to work on the princess’s wedding gown. Miriam isn’t a fan of royalty, but Ann argues passionately for the crown and how much they do for the country. Miriam concedes that it is a great honor to make the dress. Ann is nervous to work on the project, but Miriam comforts her by saying she is one of the best embroiderers she’s ever worked with.

Chapter 14 Summary: “Miriam—August 23, 1947”

Miriam longs to make her grandmother’s chicken recipe, but she can’t find the ingredients in the English stores. When a Frenchwoman visits the workroom to talk to Miss Duley about the wedding gowns, Miriam asks her where to find a French grocer. After work, Miriam arranges things with Ann that she won’t do chores that weekend so she can get the ingredients, and Ann agrees to go to the butcher. At the French grocer, Miriam feels at home and manages to get all the ingredients she needs at a reasonable price.

Miriam finds the business card Walter gave her after rescuing her shoe a few weeks ago. She impulsively calls him and agrees to have lunch with him. On Miriam’s way to the restaurant, she sees a large crowd leaving a synagogue, and she is shocked to see so many Jews congregated. Miriam thinks about going in but can’t bring herself to reopen old wounds and hurries to meet Walter instead. At the restaurant, Miriam reveals she works for Hartnell but can’t say anything about her work. Walter respects her boundaries and promises not to ask about the royal wedding gown. Miriam admits she bought an issue of Picture Weekly and enjoyed it. They talk about their careers and the war, and Walter says he lost the woman he loved during the war. Miriam asks why he asked her out. Walter says it was because she didn’t panic when her shoe got caught, and he was drawn to her. After lunch, Walter asks Miriam to call him again and says his friends call him Kaz. Miriam asks if she can call him Walter instead, and he is pleased with that.

Chapter 15 Summary: “Heather—August 29, 2016”

Heather arrives in England and checks into her hotel. She makes plans for the next day to find out more about Ann’s life. First, she will go to her old house, then Hartnell’s old offices, and lastly the Victoria and Albert Museum to see the Miriam Dassin exhibition. She wants to go to Buckingham Palace and see the queen’s wedding dress, but the tickets are sold out.

In the morning, Heather can’t find Ann’s address in Barking, so she goes to a local grocer who says that they knocked down a row of houses decades ago. Heather is disappointed that Ann’s house is no longer standing and decides not to go to Hartnell’s old offices because they are probably gone as well. At the museum, she finds that the Dassin exhibit has moved on. After looking through the museum, Heather returns to the help desk and explains her mission. The museum worker tells her that one of her professors, Dr. Friedman, is involved with the exhibit. She will reach out to him and ask him to help. Heather walks back to the hotel waiting for a message. After she takes a nap, she wakes to find a message from Dr. Friedman arranging a meeting for the next day.

Chapters 13-15 Analysis

In these chapters, Ann and Miriam finally get to start working on the wedding gown. They work on the embroidery samples, which Ann will later leave to Heather. This task causes an argument between Miriam and Ann about The Role of Royalty. Miriam doesn’t see the point of royalty because they are so far removed from the people and can do whatever they want while the common people suffer. Ann, who greatly admires the royal family, argues that they do so much for the country and are kind, giving the queen’s gift of heather cuttings as an example. Miriam concedes she may have a point, but she doesn’t change her opinion.

Miriam also confronts her past and Family Legacy for the first time when she sees a Jewish synagogue letting out. At first, she is afraid, because she has been conditioned by the war to hide her Jewishness. When she realizes it’s safe, she longs to go inside the synagogue, but her guilt stops her. She can’t face the past yet, but she is getting ready to. When Miriam meets Walter for lunch and reveals she works at Hartnell she is scared he will ask her about the gown. He doesn’t, which is a signal that he is interested in her and not just what she can do for him.

Heather’s pursuit of her legacy, meanwhile, seems to be foiled at every turn. She is unable to find Ann’s home, misses Miriam’s exhibit, and is too late for tickets to see the princess’s gown. Her quest to discover her true passion becomes entwined with her research into her family’s history. She finds that discovering what she wants requires learning more about who she is. Heather gets a break in finding out about Dr. Friedman, who will turn out to be her love interest and Miriam’s grandson.
